In 2013 at a Google All-Star Agency event at Google HQ in Mountain View, California, I and other successful agencies had the pleasure of sitting down in the cafeteria with a Google engineer

We were allowed to ask all types of questions about the algorithm. Given this rare opportunity to hear straight from the horses mouth, as you would expect, we asked everything we could about how the Google Ads algorithm works.

I don't remember the questions we asked him, but I DO REMEMBER the question he asked us. He asked our table:
"What if we made the ads at the top of the Search results completely free and didn't charge for clicks or impressions; however, the trade-off would be only the highest quality ads and websites would show. Would you be okay with that?"
I was stunned by the question. I had an inkling "searcher's intent" was the key to my current success as a ppc manager, but I had no idea to the degree in which Google favored advertising that was willing to put its users needs first.

They even value it above profit!

At that moment, I decided to go 'all in' on searcher's intent as my main strategy for my accounts I managed. This new way of thinking framed the creation of all of the campaigns, ads, keywords, and landing pages, and consulting I did from that moment on.

Once I made to switch from "reach" to "quality," my client's results skyrocketed!
